* Duluth’s Spirit Mountain Authority is going to beef up its security force to try to stop the problem of motorcyclists using ski hills for hill climbing and other acts of vandalism. Motorcyclists have been destroying barricades and tearing up newly graded trails.

* Goaltender Pete LoPresti of Eveleth yesterday signed a multiyear contract with the Minnesota North Stars. LoPresti is the son of Sam LoPresti, who played goal for Chicago in the 1940s and holds the NHL record of 80 saves in one game.

* The new and improved Blatnik Bridge linking Duluth and Superior is expected to open this week after a 10-month closure. Workers are still busy pouring the final layer of concrete, installing lights and otherwise touching up the bridge.

* About 600 people took part in an hourlong march to profess their faith in Jesus yesterday in downtown Duluth. The event, now in its third year, was led mostly by area Pentecostal churches, although Christians from a spectrum of denominations participated.
