  • Arlene Lehto yesterday became the first announced candidate for the District 8A House of Representatives seat being vacated by Rep. Jack LaVoy.  Lehto, co-owner of Lehto’s National Rubber Stamp & Printing Co., will seek the endorsements of organized labor and the DFL.
  • With three members smoking cigarettes and one a pipe, the Duluth Charter Commission yesterday postponed recommendation on a proposed ordinance forbidding smoking in public places. The commission will vote on the issue at a special meeting July 10.

    • The six-year legal battle over the Fond-du-Luth Gaming Casino is expected to end today with both sides voting on a proposed settlement. The agreement gives the city of Duluth about $6 million and the Fond du Lac band $12 million.
    • About 15 demonstrators gathered yesterday near a visiting Navy ship docked at the Duluth Port Authority to challenge the military’s practice of recruitment. The USS Estocin is visiting Duluth as part of its Great Lakes public relations and recruitment tour.
