* The Duluth School Board’s committee of the whole yesterday recommended board members be paid $25 a month and the board chairman twice that amount. The full board must still vote on the recommendation and will probably take it up at its next meeting.
* Duluthian Steve Hansen earned a silver medal at the recently completed Stokes Mandeville Wheel Chair Games in Aylesbury, Bucks, England. Hansen, a Duluth Cathedral High School graduate, won the medal in the 50-meter breast stroke.

* The Hibbing City Council will meet tomorrow night to appoint a new mayor, clerk-treasurer and councilor for Ward C. The three positions are the first in the state to have been vacated because of violations of the open meeting law.
* Extended Community Calling goes into effect in Northwestern Wisconsin tomorrow and will enable customers in any exchange to place local calls to all adjacent exchanges at a rate of 5 cents a minute. Previously, such calls were considered long distance.
