  • There will be no garbage pickup in Superior for now because of a strike by outside city employees. National Guard troops may be requested to help with plowing in the event of a heavy snowfall, Mayor Charles Deneweth said yesterday.

  • An expansion of the Eveleth Taconite Co. facility at Forbes at a cost of more than $100 million was announced yesterday. Almost simultaneously, Rep. John Blatnik announced plans for a major expansion of the National Steel Pellet plant at Keewatin.

  • Duluth school district voters have twice defeated massive building programs, yet in three years district officials have spent more than $30 million on building projects. In the process, they've addressed nearly all the problems raised in the unsuccessful bond proposals.
  • A shortage of drivers is causing problems for over-the-road trucking companies in the Twin Ports and around the country. Jon Foster, vice president of Jeff Foster Trucking in Superior, said he often turns away business for lack of drivers.
