  • The United Steelworkers of America last night struck five iron ore companies on the Iron Range and the National Iron Co. in Duluth after contract bargaining sessions broke down. The strike idles about 10,200 iron mine workers on the Range.

  • Over 70,000 cubic yards of rock west of the Point of Rocks will soon be removed to construct a new street to serve a new apartment complex. Glen Place Street will angle about two and a half blocks uphill from 12th Avenue West.

    • Lake Superior Center, the freshwater aquarium and interpretative center planned for Duluth’s waterfront, is about halfway toward raising $30 million for construction. The center will focus on information, education and preservation of Lake Superior and all fresh water.
    • Steve Ward of Trenton, Mich., placed fifth in yesterday’s Waterfront Criterium through downtown Duluth to clinch first place in the Duluth Cycling Classic. Ward finished second in the Skyline Hill Climb and fifth in the Riverfront Road Race, both on Saturday.
