Best Bets: The tribulations of an aging bachelor

Aging bachelor Don Pasquale is in a pickle. He must have a rush-job wedding to keep his nephew Ernesto from getting his inheritance and marrying Norina.

Pasquale turns to his buddy Dr. Malatesta to find him a bride, but Malatesta uses his matchmaking skills for mischief that will end in Ernesto’s favor.

Boom: Pasquale ends up with a wife bent on making his life as irksome as possible.

Lyric Opera of the North’s production of “Don Pasquale,” which opens today, stars the seasoned visiting artist Rod Nelman in the title role. Nelman has performed leading roles with the Washington National Opera, Arena di Verona, Florida Grand Opera, New York City Opera and more.

The comic opera by Donizetti will be sung in English with a contemporary setting and a chorus and orchestra.
