Theater-wise, if there is a foil to the concept of a multiplex, it is this: An old, but clean and sturdy barn in a small town where more than 20 movies will be screened this weekend in a place with close proximity to hay bales, fresh air and organic popcorn.

The 11th annual Free Range Film Festival has a mix of feature-length and short films, including comedies, dramas and docs. In between: Musical breaks by local musicians and, special this year, a jigsaw puzzle swap. The festival starts at 7 p.m. Friday and includes sessions at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at the multi-screen barn in Wrenshall.

One of the stars of this year’s lineup: “Wicker Kittens,” a pic by event organizer Mike Scholtz that includes a cast of a few other organizers as they prepared to compete in a jigsaw puzzle competition in 2011 in St. Paul. The documentary, co-produced by Amy C. Elliott, follows Scholtz’s buzz-worthy doc “Wild Bill’s Run,” about a man’s quest to snowmobile from mid-Minnesota to Moscow in the 1970s — before turning to a life of crime.

Oddly enough, this isn’t the only film with a jigsaw-theme (thus the puzzle swap).
