Bertha M. Jarvela
Bertha M. Jarvela, 89, passed peacefully with members of her family at her side, on May 1, 2014, after a long journey with dementia.
Bertha was born October 24, 1924, in Cedar Valley Township to Andrew and Ida Maki. She graduated from Floodwood High School in 1942. On November 7, 1942, she was united in marriage to Clifford Jarvela. She followed her husband to Florida and Mississippi until Cliff went overseas during World War II. While raising two children, she worked as a bookkeeper in Wadena, Minnesota, and Ironwood, Michigan. Cliff and Bertha moved to Minong, Wisconsin, in their retirement years and spent many winters in Texas before moving to Grand Rapids.
Bertha was an excellent homemaker, enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and playing bridge and Mahjong. She left may cherished memories for all who knew her.
Bertha lived her faith, served her church, and was a longtime member at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; son Dennis; sister Violet and brother Toivo.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Cliff; one daughter Diane (Larry) of Marion, Iowa; daughter-in-law Ann (Dennis) of Monclova, Ohio; four grandchildren, Amy, Lynne, Melissa and Jim; seven great-grandchildren; sisters Elsa (Phil) Kinsman and Feimi Talso; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at River Grand, especially the Grand Court staff who cared for Bertha for almost three years. Bertha was blessed to have you in her life.
Memorial service will be at a later date.
