Baseball: Late rally can’t save Huskies in Wisconsin

Email

Paul DeJong hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, and the Wisconsin Woodchucks benefitted enough from Duluth Huskies mistakes that even a six-run seventh

inning didn’t hurt their chances in a 9-6 Northwoods League baseball victory Sunday at Athletic Park in Wausau, Wis.

DeJong had two hits and five RBIs for the Woodchucks, who already led 3-0 before the third baseman hit his fifth home run of the season off reliever Ryan Agnitsch. Wisconsin added two more runs off former Hermantown star Ryan Folman in the fifth for a

9-0 lead.

The Huskies (4-9) rallied with a big seventh, keyed by Michael Fries’ two-run single and Keach Ballard’s three-run homer — his first of the season.

Ballard, Nolan Johnson and Grady Caldwell each had two of the Huskies’ 10 hits off four Woodchucks pitchers. Starter Parker Dunshee tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win. Minnesota Duluth sophomore Bo Hellquist allowed six earned runs in three innings in the defeat.

Duluth made four errors as its fielding issues continued.

The teams conclude their two-game series at 6:35 p.m. today in Wausau.
