Bacteria forces boil water advisory in Mellen

Mellen city officials issued a boil water advisory on Wednesday because of fecal coliform and E. coli bacterial contamination.

Sampling on June 18, and again on Monday, indicated elevated levels of bacteria in the water supply of the Ashland County community.

Mellen Municipal Utilities officials advise boiling or using commercial bottled water for drinking, food preparation and ice-making. When boiling water, it should be heated to a rolling boil for at least one minute before use.

The Ashland Daily Press reported that the water system is being treated with increased chlorine, and city water lines are being flushed. Additional sampling will be conducted until it shows that the water is safe to use.
