Authorities ID woman killed in Douglas County crash

Authorities on Sunday released the name of an 18-year-old Ashland woman killed in a head-on crash between a car and a logging truck early Saturday in Douglas County.

Gabrielle Bresette was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that happened at about 5:15 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 2 near Olson Road in the town of Maple.

Bresette was a passenger in a westbound Ford Focus driven by Derek Nelis, 43, of Ashland, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported. The car crossed the centerline and hit an eastbound logging truck head-on.

The logging truck was driven by Antoine Dalbec, 51, of Maple. His passenger, Sheena Lowell, 29, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Neither driver was injured.

The sheriff’s office reported Sunday that Nelis told deputies that the car “made a noise and started to shimmy before crossing the centerline.” Dalbec and Lowell told authorities that the oncoming car “suddenly shot across the road without warning,” the sheriff’s office reported.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Bresette was a 2014 graduate of Ashland High School and an avid soccer player, according to an obituary posted online.
