Ashland teen accused of killing father appears in court
A teenager accused of killing his custodial father in Ashland last December made his first appearance in court Monday. Fourteen-year-old Joseph Ackley is accused of shooting and stabbing 52-year-old William Saari.
Ashland Investigator Scott Moreland testified.
Moreland said Ackley admitted he intended to kill both of his parents after arriving home from juvenile detention. Ackley described getting a .22 rifle out of the home and lying in wait to shoot Saari in the cheek.
Later, a knife got involved and Ackley stabbed Saari. Ackley admitted he narrowly missed with a shot at the victim’s wife, Carol Saari.
Ackley later exchanged fire with a female officer and also shot himself in the stomach.
The judge denied a request to drop a first-degree attempted homicide charge. Ackley will appear in court again June 11.
