Superior oil refinery rocked by explosions, fire



Alice Behn, 92, Duluth, passed away on July 21, 2014 at Keystone Bluffs Assisted Living where she had lived since May.

She was born on April 28, 1922, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin to Chris and Hazel Karlsrud.

Alice graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1939 and Eau Claire Business School in 1941.

Prior to moving to Duluth in 1954, she had resided in Norfolk Virginia, New Richmond Wisconsin, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. She had been employed by Westmoreland, Larson & Hill in Duluth, retiring in 1985 after 25 years. In 1972 she was chosen as the Secretary of the Year of the Minn-Arrow Chapter, National Secretaries Association. Her family built a log home on Pine Lake, New Auburn, Wisconsin, where she enjoyed summers spent with family and friends. She also enjoyed many arts and crafts and spent her last years knitting caps and mittens for the Duluth school children and skullcaps for the military to wear under their helmets as part Operation Minnesota Nice.

Alice was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Shari (Beaulier) in 2004; and her brother Lloyd (Karlsrud) in 2005.

Alice is survived by her son, Steve (Laurie) of North Richland Hills, Texas; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

SERVICE: In accordance with her wishes, there will be a private graveside service at Forest Hills Cemetery in Chippewa Falls, Wis. Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of Minnesota. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Duluth.
