Alexandria cruises to victory over Huskies

Twelve of the first 13 batters reached base in an eight-run fifth inning as Alexandria cruised to a 14-5 victory over the Duluth Huskies in a Northwoods League baseball game Sunday afternoon in Alexandria, Minn.

Huskies manager Daniel Hersey wasn’t around to see the carnage as he was ejected in the top of the fifth for arguing a runner interference call that ended in a double play.

Already leading 5-2, the Blue Anchors (6-13) teed off on relievers A.J. McElderry and Chase Hoag in the bottom of the inning. The first five batters singled and Nehwon Norkeh hit a three-run home run to end McElderry’s night. Hoag walked five batters the rest of the inning and Rickey Sanchez’s two-run double completed the damage.

Sanchez was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Jeremy Hyde had two of Alexandria’s 17 hits and drove in three runs as well.

The Huskies (8-10), who head into the All-Star break seventh in the nine-team North Division, resume play Thursday against Waterloo at Wade Stadium.
