  • The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District is considering the use of solid waste as a fuel for the incineration of sewage treatment sludge. The district's new sewage treatment plant will produce about 30 tons of sludge a day.
  • The movement of import-export cargo through the port of Duluth-Superior in 1973 overtook the record tonnage of 1972, the Port Authority announced yesterday. Final reports show international cargo totaled 8,993,548 tons in 1973 compared with 5,245,344 tons in 1972.

  • A location on McQuade Road has been proposed for a safe harbor and boat launch on Lake Superior. The site, on the border of Lakewood and Duluth townships, is the consensus choice of a committee organized by Duluth Mayor Gary Doty.
  • Eveleth-Gilbert teachers voted 93-0 yesterday to authorize a strike that could happen as early as Feb. 8. Eveleth and Gilbert schools began sharing resources in 1986, and the district was consolidated on July 1, 1993.
