The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District is considering the use of solid waste as a fuel for the incineration of sewage treatment sludge. The district's new sewage treatment plant will produce about 30 tons of sludge a day.

The movement of import-export cargo through the port of Duluth-Superior in 1973 overtook the record tonnage of 1972, the Port Authority announced yesterday. Final reports show international cargo totaled 8,993,548 tons in 1973 compared with 5,245,344 tons in 1972.

The site, on the border of Lakewood and Duluth townships, is the consensus choice of a committee organized by Duluth Mayor Gary Doty.Eveleth-Gilbert teachers voted 93-0 yesterday to authorize a strike that could happen as early as Feb. 8. Eveleth and Gilbert schools began sharing resources in 1986, and the district was consolidated on July 1, 1993.
