Maki & Overom Announces New Attorneys

Maki & Overom, Ltd. is pleased to announce the additions of Brent R. Olson and Chelsea J. Helmer to its firm as attorneys.

Ms. Helmer is a native of the Duluth area and a graduate of The University of Minnesota-Duluth. Ms. Helmer received her law degree from the Mitchell Hamline School of Law, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Ms. Helmer was a Deans Scholarship Award Recipient and earned CALI Awards in Banking Law, Income Tax, Employment Law, and Foundations for Negotiation/Mediation. Ms. Helmer served on the American Bar Association National Mediation Representation Team and is a Rule 114 Qualified Neutral. Ms. Helmer has extensive experience working in municipal government. Prior to joining Maki & Overom, Ms. Helmer served as a Law Clerk for the League of Minnesota Cities and as the Assistant City Clerk for the City of Duluth. Ms. Helmer is involved in the community and currently serves as President of the League of Women Voters Duluth. Ms. Helmer was recently awarded a 20 Under 40 Award by the Duluth News Tribune. Ms. Helmer will be practicing in the areas of Municipal Law, Economic Development, Real Property, Business Planning, Corporate Law, and Estate Planning.

Mr. Olson has been practicing law within the Duluth area for over eight years. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Mr. Olson received his law degree from the University of North Dakota and is licensed to practice law in Minnesota. Mr. Olson has previously worked as an Assistant Public Defender for the Sixth Judicial District in Duluth, and as a Staff Attorney for the Indian Legal Assistance Program. He spent the first eight years of his practice in a courtroom. He is an accomplished trial attorney and former member of the American Academy of Forensic Science. He is passionate about restorative justice, having worked with the court system to help develop the Domestic Violence Restorative Circles program and was the public defense representative for the South St. Louis County DWI Court. He will be practicing in the areas of Criminal Prosecution, Business Planning, Corporate Law, Municipal Law, Estate Planning, Criminal Defense, Commercial Law and General Litigation.
