Tavern on the Hill, Duluth’s newest restaurant, opens today at 1102 Woodland Ave., just east of the University of Minnesota Duluth. And unlike many restaurants that have opened in Duluth in recent years, it is locally owned and not part of a national chain.

The casual but upscale, medium-priced eatery will be open for lunch and dinner and is the latest addition to the BlueStone Commons mixed-use development at the former Woodland Middle School site. The 10,000-square-foot restaurant features a large bar with extensive woodwork and murals, a dining room, patio area and an entry hub that offers prepared food items and desserts for people on the go.

Officials with the Duluth-based Black Woods Group, which owns the restaurant, say it was designed to appeal to both college student and neighborhood residents.
