Tavern on the Hill, a new 350-seat restaurant at BlueStone Commons along Woodland Avenue, is on track to open to the public Aug. 25.

The new standalone, 10,000-square-foot restaurant at 1102 Woodland Ave. will feature a large bar, outdoor patio and a “Grab and Go” section for customers to buy pizza, desserts, prepared a la carte and other dishes to take home.

Among the series of restaurants opening recently in Duluth, Tavern on the Hill is different because it is locally owned and not part of a big nationwide chain.

It is the newest venture by the Black Woods Group, formerly New London Corp., which owns the area Black Woods restaurants. But Tavern on the Hill will not be another Black Woods, its officials say.

The restaurant is meant to appeal not only to local college students but to neighborhood residents.

It will be open daily for lunch and dinner with a casual atmosphere. Besides burgers, pizza and other traditional favorites, the menu will include bison burgers, sushi, soups, salads, panini sandwiches and vegetarian dishes, with prices less than $10 for lunch and up to $15 for dinner.

Tavern on the Hill is hiring a total of 100 full- and part-time positions, including managers, servers, chefs and support staff.

While Aug. 25 is the targeted opening, many will get a preview of the new eatery during a pre-opening benefit Aug. 21 to benefit Northwood Children’s Services. About 1,000 people are expected to attend.
